Recipe #7: Sweet Pongal

Sweet Pongal

Sweet Pongal is generally done on all auspicious days and festivals and sometimes instead of payasam.

Sweet Pongal can be prepared either with sugar or jaggery. But for the festival Pongal, sugar is used to prepare this as a prayer to Surya.

1) Take one measure of rice and half measure of moong dal and soak for 15 minutes
2) Keep in cooker and add four measures of water and keep in high and wait for main whistle. Then allow to simmer for 3-5 minutes (based on how much it has to be cooked, additional small amounts of water can be added if required).
3) Now while simmering add half measure of sugar (Note: Sugar can also be replaced with smashed jaggery of the same quantity)
4) In kadai, take 3 tablespoons of ghee and add 3-4 chopped cashews and some dry grapes and then fry till it roasts
5) Add this to the cooker while simmering
6) Add smashed/powedered elaichi directly to the cooked rice and mix well (but make sure the rice is not broken to paste while mixing hot)
